The Effects of Divorce

Don't couples realize the consequences of divorcing? After paying the price for an attorney, hotel room, moving van, and the price of the house, one realizes there are more fees to pay, starting with the psychological impact.

Some of the most common effects on the children include exhibiting more health problems: children develop safety issues with only one parent in the house, and the divorce also creates higher stress levels (2).

Behavioral and emotional problems also appear more often in children suffering with divorced parents. Children with divorced parents are more likely to have depression and thoughts of suicide. Acting out in class becomes a trend for many children with divorced parents (2).

Other effects on children include: involvement with drugs, higher suicide rates, and performing poorly in reading, spelling, and math (1).


But don't forget, divorce doesn't only affect the children--families who experience divorce commonly exhibit an income decrease of up to 50% less after divorce. In addition, about 50% of families with children move into poverty after divorce (3).
